SHRM-SCP Exam Prep: What Is the SHRM-SCP and How to Pass It

What is the SHRM-SCP?

An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The SHRM-SCP rewards the judgment you’ve built through years of strategic work.

So why does it matter? A professional certification:

What does SHRM-SCP stand for?

The SHRM-SCP sits above the operational-level SHRM-CP. It is a separate credential from HRCI’s senior-level SPHR. In our opinion, the HRCI and SHRM certifications are comparable.

Is the SHRM-SCP right for you?

To be eligible for the SHRM-SCP, you need one of the following:

• At least three years of strategic-level HR or HR-related work, totaling at least 1,000 hours per calendar year
• At least three years holding the SHRM-CP, and you’re working in, or transitioning to, a strategic-level role

If your work is mostly operational today, the SHRM-CP is likely the better fit for now.

We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.

How do you get SHRM-SCP certified?

1. Decide which exam to take. Confirm you meet the strategic-experience requirement. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help.
2. Apply during an application period. SHRM handles applications and eligibility (details at shrm.org). Apply early for the early-bird rate; applications close at the standard deadline for each window.
3. Decide when and where you’ll test. The SHRM-SCP is offered in two testing windows each year: May 1 to July 15 and December 1 to February 15. You’ll test in person at a Prometric test center. The current window runs December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027, and standard applications are open through December 24, 2026.
4. Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study, a prep course, or the micro-credential path. (More below.)
5. Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 12-, 8-, and 4-week SHRM schedules make this easy.
6. Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
7. Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
8. Use your designation and stay certified. Add SHRM-SCP after your name. Recertify every three years by earning 60 professional development credits (PDCs) or by retaking the exam.

What’s on the SHRM-SCP exam?

• Questions: 134 multiple-choice
• Time: 3 hours and 40 minutes of testing time
• Where: in person at a Prometric test center
• Cost: $399 for SHRM members or $499 for nonmembers at the standard rate; early-bird rates are $350 and $450

The SHRM-SCP uses the same format as the SHRM-CP, but its scenarios are strategic, and you get credit only for the most effective course of action.

How long should you study for the SHRM-SCP?

HRCP’s free 2026 SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP study schedules come in three lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:

• 12-week: a steady pace for busy HR leaders
• 8-week: a focused, faster plan
• 4-week: an intensive plan if your window is close

Focus on the areas where you have the least training and experience, and practice situational judgment every week.

How to pass the SHRM-SCP

The study tips we share with every SHRM-SCP candidate:

• Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
• Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
• Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
• Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
• Practice situational judgment. Several answers may sound reasonable; pick the most effective one.
• Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
• Practice timed exams. On the SHRM-SCP you need to answer about one question every 90 seconds. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
• Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
• Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming.
