SPHR Exam Prep: What Is the SPHR and How to Pass It

HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.

By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026

What is the SPHR?

The SPHR® (Senior Professional in Human Resources) is a senior-level HR certification for leaders who shape HR strategy and policy, align people practices with business goals, and guide organizational direction in the United States. Earning it tells employers you can lead HR strategically.

An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The SPHR is built for the people who decide what HR should do and why. If you advise executives, own HR policy, or lead an HR team, it matches the work you already do.

So why does it matter? A professional certification:

  • Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
  • Builds credibility with employers
  • Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
  • Helps you stand out in the job market
  • Increases career mobility and earning potential
  • Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards

What does SPHR stand for?

SPHR stands for Senior Professional in Human Resources. When you pass, you can use the SPHR designation after your name.

The SPHR is HRCI’s senior U.S. certification, above the entry-level aPHR and the professional-level PHR. It is not the same as the SHRM-SCP, a separate senior credential with its own exam.

Is the SPHR right for you?

The SPHR may be right for you if your current or most recent HR work is strategic: you develop policy, lead HR initiatives, and influence senior leaders. As of 2026, you need four to seven years of professional-level HR experience, depending on your education.

To be eligible for the SPHR, you need one of the following:

  • At least 4 years of professional-level HR experience plus a master’s degree or higher
  • At least 5 years of professional-level HR experience plus a bachelor’s degree
  • At least 7 years of professional-level HR experience

Your degree doesn’t need to be in HR. If most of your work is still hands-on HR operations, the PHR may be a better fit right now.

We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.

How do you get SPHR certified?

Getting SPHR certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and take the exam.

  1. Decide which exam to take. Make sure the SPHR matches your experience and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help.
  2. Apply for the exam. HRCI handles applications, eligibility review, and scheduling (details at hrci.org).
  3. Decide when and where you’ll test. The SPHR is offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a live proctor.
  4. Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study, a prep course, or the micro-credential path. (More on all three below.)
  5. Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 12-, 8-, and 4-week schedules make this easy.
  6. Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
  7. Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
  8. Use your designation and stay certified. Add SPHR after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 60 recertification credits (45 HR and 15 Business) or by retaking the exam.

Prefer to hear it live? Join our free webinar, HR Certification Unlocked: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Earn It, held the second Thursday of every month at 12:00 pm MT. We’ll walk you through choosing the right exam, preparing effectively, and testing with confidence.

Self-study, a prep course, or micro-credentials?

About half of our customers self-study. It’s the lowest-cost option, fits a senior leader’s unpredictable calendar, and works well if you’re self-motivated. The 2026 Complete HRCP Program comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions for exactly that reason.

Prefer structure? A prep course gives you a set curriculum, an instructor, and peers; most run 12 to 16 weeks. Dozens of partner organizations use HRCP materials as their course textbook. Browse upcoming prep courses.

What’s on the SPHR exam?

As of 2026, the SPHR exam has 140 questions (115 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions), and you get 2 hours and 30 minutes to answer them. Questions cover five functional areas, and Leadership and Strategy carries the most weight at 33%.

  • Questions: 140 (115 scored + 25 pretest)
  • Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time
  • Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
  • Cost: $595 ($495 exam fee + $100 application fee)
SPHR functional areaShare of exam
Leadership and Strategy 33%
Talent Management 23%
Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition 17%
Total Rewards 17%
HR Information Management, Safety, and Security 10%

Expect mostly multiple-choice questions, plus multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and scenario questions. Many ask what you should do first or what the best strategic response would be, so you need to apply what you know, not just recall it.

The HRCP Program covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam, and our staff takes the exams on a regular basis so our materials reflect what’s actually tested.

As of 2026, HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline for the SPHR.

How long should you study for the SPHR?

Plan on roughly 100 to 150 hours of study over three to four months. Your timeline depends on your experience and how much time you can give each week.

HRCP’s free 2026 PHR/SPHR study schedules come in three lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:

  • 12-week: a steady pace for busy HR leaders
  • 8-week: a focused, faster plan
  • 4-week: an intensive plan if your test date is close

Focus on the functional areas with the most questions (start with Leadership and Strategy) and the areas where you have the least training and experience.

How to pass the SPHR

To pass the SPHR, follow a study schedule, study daily, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain the concepts, perform the necessary calculations, and apply your knowledge to strategic situations.

The study tips we share with every SPHR candidate:

  • Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
  • Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
  • Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
  • Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
  • Think like an executive. The best answer usually aligns with business goals and addresses the root cause.
  • Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
  • Practice timed exams. On the SPHR you need to answer about one question a minute. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
  • Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
  • Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming the night before.
