aPHR vs SHRM-CP: Which First for New HR Pros?
aPHR vs SHRM-CP: Which Certification First for New HR Pros?
By Terri Varnell, SPHR, SPHRi, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026
This comparison is published by HRCP, an independent provider of HR certification preparation materials. HRCP sells the aPHR Program for the aPHR and the Complete HRCP Program for the SHRM-CP (and PHR, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP). Fee, eligibility, and exam details are taken from HRCI and SHRM primary pages (linked below) and were re-checked in October 2026.
The short answer
If you have little or no HR experience, both the aPHR (HRCI) and the SHRM-CP (SHRM) can be open to you—but they are not the same career level. The aPHR is HRCI’s associate / foundational credential. The SHRM-CP is SHRM’s professional-level credential.
Choose the aPHR for a foundational HRCI exam with year-round Pearson VUE / OnVUE scheduling. Choose the SHRM-CP for a professional SHRM credential that blends knowledge with situational judgment, delivered in person at Prometric during published windows.
Exam fees (as of October 2026): aPHR $400 total; SHRM-CP $350–$499 depending on membership and early-bird vs standard timing. Prep paths differ: the aPHR Program for aPHR, and the Complete HRCP Program for SHRM-CP.
Both credentials are widely recognized, and both can be attempted without prior HR experience. That does not make them interchangeable rungs on the same chart. Here’s a fair, side-by-side look based on what each credentialing body publishes. For broader career-stage guidance, see Which HR Certification Is Right for You?.

How we compared these credentials: This page compares the aPHR® and SHRM-CP® certifications themselves—not prep products. Details are attributed to HRCI’s aPHR page, HRCI exam fees, HRCI pass rates, HRCI recertification fees, HRCI exam structure, SHRM eligibility, SHRM exam options and fees (including Exam Statistics / pass rates by testing window), and SHRM recertification, reviewed in October 2026. HRCI publishes annual pass rates; SHRM publishes rates by testing window—this does not mean one exam is easier than the other. Published pass rates are from each credentialing body, not HRCP claims. HRCP publishes this comparison. HRCP sells the aPHR Program and the Complete HRCP Program. Prices and policies may change.

Key differences between the aPHR and SHRM-CP
Different career levels (even with the same “no experience” starting point)
The aPHR is HRCI’s associate / foundational credential. The SHRM-CP is SHRM’s professional-level credential for operational HR work. SHRM does not require experience for the SHRM-CP, so early-career candidates often compare the two—but they are not equivalent.
Credentialing body and framework
The aPHR is issued by HRCI and built on HRCI’s Exam Content Outline (five functional areas). The SHRM-CP is issued by SHRM and built on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (SHRM BASK®).
Exam length and style
The aPHR is a knowledge-based foundational exam (65 scored + 25 pretest; about 1 hour 45 minutes of testing). The SHRM-CP is a professional exam (134 items; about 3 hours 40 minutes of testing) with a large situational-judgment component (~40%).
Delivery and scheduling
Both exams require application approval before you schedule. aPHR testing is available year-round through Pearson VUE testing centers or OnVUE online proctoring (180 days to test once approved). SHRM-CP testing is in person at Prometric centers during published windows after your application is approved.
Cost structure
aPHR has a single published total ($400). SHRM-CP pricing varies by membership and early-bird vs standard application timing ($350–$499 for standard member/nonmember bands), with separate military and student rates.
Prep products at HRCP
HRCP provides the aPHR Program for the aPHR exam and the Complete HRCP Program for the SHRM-CP exam (see HRCP SHRM-CP Prep; the Complete Program also covers PHR, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP).
Why choose the aPHR if you qualify for the SHRM-CP?
Meeting SHRM-CP eligibility does not mean it is the right first exam. You can apply for the SHRM-CP with no HR experience on paper, but without some level of HR knowledge or experience, that exam can be extremely challenging. Many candidates who qualify for both still choose the aPHR for clear, practical reasons:
- You want HRCI’s associate / foundational credential to show you are building your base in HR, including when you are entering from another field.
- You prefer studying against HRCI’s Exam Content Outline (ECO) across five functional areas rather than SHRM’s BASK® + situational-judgment mix.
- You want year-round Pearson VUE testing-center or OnVUE online-proctored scheduling instead of SHRM’s published Prometric windows (both require application approval before you schedule).
- The separate aPHR Program price point fits your budget better than starting with the Complete HRCP Program for the SHRM-CP.
- You see the aPHR as a step toward later HRCI credentials such as the PHR or SPHR once you gain the required experience.
Match your first credential to your background, what you want it to demonstrate, and how you learn best.
Which is harder: aPHR or SHRM-CP?
For most candidates, the SHRM-CP is harder. The aPHR is a knowledge-based, associate-level HRCI exam across five functional areas. The SHRM-CP is a professional-level exam that requires applying HR knowledge to workplace situations—about 40% situational-judgment items—so knowing the concepts is not enough; you have to choose the best response among several plausible options.
I’ve personally taken both the aPHR and SHRM-CP exams. In my experience, they require different approaches: the aPHR rewards solid foundational knowledge; the SHRM-CP rewards judgment under situational scenarios.
- The aPHR is associate-level and knowledge-based against HRCI’s Exam Content Outline (ECO).
- The SHRM-CP is professional-level, all multiple-choice, with knowledge items and situational-judgment scenarios (~40%). Even when you know the concepts, choosing the best response takes practice.
- Published pass rates (aPHR 71% as of Dec. 31, 2025; SHRM-CP 68% for the May–Jul 2025 window) use different reporting methods; this does not mean one exam is easier than the other across the board.
Everyone’s background and strengths differ, so focus on your own abilities as you prepare and take the exam.
Which do employers ask for?
Because the aPHR and SHRM-CP sit at different career levels, they are not interchangeable on every posting. An employer that requests the SHRM-CP (or another professional-level credential) may not accept the aPHR in its place. Some early-career or associate-level roles list the aPHR specifically, or ask for an HR certification without naming one.
Always check the posting for that role.
Can you hold both the aPHR and the SHRM-CP?
Yes. Holding credentials from both bodies is common among HR professionals who want the advantage both certifications provide. Each body administers its own exam, fees, and three-year recertification cycle.
Some early-career professionals start with the aPHR and later pursue the SHRM-CP or a mid-level HRCI credential such as the PHR. Others begin with the SHRM-CP. If you already meet PHR experience requirements, compare PHR vs SHRM-CP instead of this early-career pair.
Many professional development activities can support both recertification paths when they align with each body’s rules (for example, HRCI credits with an ethics activity, and SHRM PDCs). Always confirm current rules on HRCI and SHRM recertification pages before you plan a dual path.
Who should choose which?
The aPHR may be a strong fit if you…
- Are starting in HR (or exploring HR) and want HRCI’s associate / foundational credential
- Prefer a foundational exam with year-round Pearson VUE testing-center or OnVUE online-proctored scheduling
- Want to build toward later HRCI credentials such as the PHR
- See aPHR (or “aPHR or equivalent”) listed on the job postings you care about
The SHRM-CP may be a strong fit if you…
- Want SHRM’s professional-level credential and do not need (or do not yet have) HR experience for eligibility
- Prefer an exam that blends knowledge with situational judgment
- Are comfortable with SHRM’s published testing windows and in-person Prometric delivery
- See SHRM-CP (or “SHRM-CP or equivalent”) on the postings you care about

Frequently asked questions
Is the aPHR or the SHRM-CP better for someone with no HR experience?
Neither is universally better—and they are not the same career level. The aPHR is HRCI’s associate / foundational credential with no experience required. The SHRM-CP is SHRM’s professional-level credential that also has no experience, degree, or HR-title requirement. Choose by credential level, exam style, and scheduling.
Which should I take first if I have little or no HR experience?
Choose by goal, not by a single “easier” label. Pick the aPHR for HRCI’s associate credential and year-round Pearson VUE / OnVUE scheduling. Pick the SHRM-CP for SHRM’s professional credential with Prometric windows and situational judgment. For broader framing, see Which HR Certification Is Right for You? or the free HR Cert Fit Assessment.
Are the aPHR and SHRM-CP the same level of certification?
No. The aPHR is HRCI’s associate / foundational credential. The SHRM-CP is SHRM’s professional-level credential for operational HR. SHRM does not require prior HR experience for the SHRM-CP, so early-career candidates often compare them even though they sit at different levels.
Which is harder, the aPHR or the SHRM-CP?
For most candidates, the SHRM-CP is harder. The aPHR is a knowledge-based foundational HRCI exam across five functional areas. The SHRM-CP is a professional exam that requires applying knowledge through situational-judgment scenarios (~40%). Published pass rates use different methods; this does not mean one exam is necessarily easier than the other—focus on your own strengths.
Do employers prefer the aPHR or the SHRM-CP?
They sit at different career levels, so they are not interchangeable on every posting. An employer that requests the SHRM-CP may not accept the aPHR in its place.
Can I hold both the aPHR and the SHRM-CP?
Yes. Holding credentials from both bodies is common among HR professionals. Each has its own exam and three-year recertification cycle. Some start with the aPHR and later add a SHRM or mid-level HRCI credential; others begin with the SHRM-CP. You still have to meet each body’s rules and pay fees separately.
How much do the aPHR and SHRM-CP exams cost?
As of October 2026: aPHR is $300 exam + $100 application = $400 total (HRCI exam fees). SHRM-CP is $350 member / $450 nonmember early bird, or $399 / $499 standard (includes application fee; standard also includes a deadline fee), per SHRM exam options and fees. Confirm current fees before you apply.
What are the eligibility differences?
Neither requires prior HR experience. The aPHR has no HR experience requirement (HRCI). The SHRM-CP does not require an HR title, degree, or previous HR experience; SHRM recommends basic working knowledge of HR practices (SHRM eligibility).
What is the difference in exam format?
The aPHR is a knowledge-based exam (65 scored + 25 pretest in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus about 30 minutes administration) at a Pearson VUE testing center or through OnVUE online proctoring, with varied item types (traditional multiple choice and alternative formats). The SHRM-CP has 134 multiple-choice items (110 scored + 24 field-test; 80 knowledge + 54 situational-judgment) across two sections—3 hours 40 minutes of testing within a four-hour Prometric appointment during published windows. Application and situational judgment sit on the SHRM-CP side.
How do aPHR and SHRM-CP recertification compare?
Both use a three-year cycle. aPHR holders earn 45 HRCI recertification credits (including at least one ethics-themed activity) or retake the exam—see HRCI recertification for current fees and policies. SHRM-CP holders earn 60 PDCs or retake the exam—see SHRM recertification for current fees and policies.
Does one prep program cover both the aPHR and the SHRM-CP?
No, HRCP provides the aPHR Program for the aPHR exam and the Complete HRCP Program for the SHRM-CP exam (see HRCP SHRM-CP Prep; the Complete Program also covers PHR, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP). You still apply and pay for each exam with HRCI or SHRM.
Is HRCP affiliated with HRCI or SHRM?
No. HRCP is an independent exam prep provider. aPHR® is a registered trademark of HRCI. SHRM-CP® is a registered trademark of SHRM. HRCP is not affiliated with HRCI or SHRM for the exams. HRCP is listed in HRCI’s Certification Preparation Provider directory and has offered HR certification prep since 1995.
