aPHR Exam Prep: What Is the aPHR and How to Pass It
HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.
By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026
What is the aPHR?
The aPHR® (Associate Professional in Human Resources) is an entry-level HR certification for people starting their HR journey or managing people without formal HR training. No HR experience is required, so it’s one of the fastest ways to show employers you know the fundamentals of HR.
An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The aPHR is designed for where you are right now: a student, a career changer, an HR assistant, or a manager who handles HR tasks. It proves you understand the basics, and it gives you a strong foundation for the PHR later.
So why does it matter? A professional certification:
- Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
- Builds credibility with employers
- Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
- Helps you stand out in the job market
- Increases career mobility and earning potential
- Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards
Ready to start preparing?
The 2026 aPHR HRCP Program gives you the tools you need to prepare for the aPHR, backed by our You Pass or Your Money Back guarantee.

aPHR stands for Associate Professional in Human Resources. When you pass, you can use the aPHR designation after your name and on your résumé.
The aPHR is HRCI’s entry-level certification. As you grow, the next steps are the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) and the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources). SHRM’s entry point is the SHRM-CP, a separate credential with its own exam.
Is the aPHR right for you?
The aPHR may be right for you if you’re new to HR, thinking about moving into HR, or supervising people without formal HR training. As of 2026, no HR experience is required; it’s a knowledge-based credential.
The aPHR is a great fit if you are:
- A college student or recent graduate who wants to stand out for HR jobs
- Changing careers into HR from another field
- Working in an HR support role, such as HR assistant or coordinator
- A manager or small-business owner who handles HR without an HR title
If you already have at least one to four years of professional-level HR experience (depending on your education), look at the PHR instead.
We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.

Take the HR Cert Fit AssessmentHow do you get aPHR certified?
Getting aPHR certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and take the exam.
- Decide which exam to take. Confirm the aPHR fits your experience and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help.
- Apply for the exam. HRCI handles applications and scheduling (details at hrci.org). Because no experience is required, the application is straightforward.
- Decide when and where you’ll test. The aPHR is offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a live proctor from home.
- Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study or a prep course. (More on both below.)
- Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 6- and 4-week aPHR schedules make this easy.
- Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
- Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
- Use your designation and stay certified. Add aPHR after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 45 recertification credits or by retaking the exam.

Self-study or a prep course?
About half of our customers self-study. It’s the lowest-cost option, fits around school or work, and works well if you’re self-motivated. Think about how you learn best and choose materials that match. The 2026 aPHR HRCP Program comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions for exactly that reason.
Prefer an instructor and classmates? A prep course gives you structure, accountability, and someone to answer your questions. aPHR courses are shorter than PHR/SPHR courses; some run as little as four weeks. Many partner organizations use HRCP materials as their course textbook. Browse upcoming aPHR prep courses.
What’s on the aPHR exam?
As of 2026, the aPHR exam has 90 questions (65 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions), and you get 1 hour and 45 minutes to answer them. Questions cover five functional areas, and Compliance and Risk Management carries the most weight at 25%.
- Questions: 90 (65 scored + 25 pretest)
- Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time
- Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
- Cost: $400 ($300 exam fee + $100 application fee)
| aPHR functional area | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Compliance and Risk Management | 25% |
| Employee Relations | 24% |
| Talent Acquisition | 19% |
| Compensation and Benefits | 17% |
| Learning and Development | 15% |
Expect mostly multiple-choice questions, plus multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and short scenario questions. Even at the entry level, the exam checks whether you can apply HR basics, such as which law fits a situation, not just define terms. Compliance carries the most weight, so give U.S. employment laws extra attention.
The aPHR HRCP Program covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam, organized into the same five functional areas.
As of 2026, HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline for the aPHR.
How long should you study for the aPHR?
Plan on roughly 50 to 75 hours of study over one to two months. If HR is brand new to you, give yourself the longer end of that range.
HRCP’s free 2026 aPHR study schedules come in two lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:
- 6-week: a steady pace if you’re working or in school
- 4-week: a focused plan if your test date is close
Focus on the functional areas with the most questions (Compliance and Risk Management and Employee Relations make up almost half the exam) and the topics that are newest to you.

To pass the aPHR, follow a study schedule, study a little every day, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain core HR concepts and apply them to everyday workplace situations.
The study tips we share with every aPHR candidate:
- Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
- Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
- Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just memorize terms; know how to apply them.
- Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
- Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
- Practice timed exams. You’ll have a little over a minute per question. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
- Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
- Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming.
