aPHRi Exam Prep: What Is the aPHRi and How to Pass It
HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.
By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026
What is the aPHRi?
The aPHRi® (Associate Professional in Human Resources – International) is an entry-level HR certification for people starting their HR journey outside the United States. No HR experience is required, so it’s one of the fastest ways to show employers anywhere in the world that you know the fundamentals of HR.
An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The aPHRi focuses on globally recognized HR principles rather than U.S. employment law, so it fits HR roles in your own country. It’s a strong first credential for students, career changers, HR assistants, and managers who handle people issues without formal HR training.
So why does it matter? A professional certification:
- Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
- Builds credibility with employers
- Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
- Helps you stand out in the job market
- Increases career mobility and earning potential
- Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards

aPHRi stands for Associate Professional in Human Resources – International. Once you’ve passed, you can use the aPHRi designation after your name and on your CV or résumé.
The aPHRi is HRCI’s entry-level international certification. As your career grows, the next steps are the PHRi (Professional in Human Resources – International) and the SPHRi (Senior Professional in Human Resources – International). If you work in the United States, the aPHR is the U.S. version, with a different content outline.
Is the aPHRi right for you?
The aPHRi may be right for you if you’re new to HR, moving into HR, or supervising people without formal HR training, and you work outside the United States. As of 2026, no HR experience is required; it’s a knowledge-based credential.
The aPHRi is a great fit if you are:
- A university student or recent graduate who wants to stand out for HR roles
- Changing careers into HR
- Working in an HR support role, such as HR assistant or coordinator
- A manager or business owner who handles HR without an HR title
If you already have professional-level HR experience, look at the PHRi instead.
We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.
Not sure which level fits you?
Take our free HR Certification Fit Assessment. It’s built around the U.S. credentials, but the levels line up: aPHR to aPHRi, PHR to PHRi, and SPHR to SPHRi. Use it to find your level, then choose the international version.
Take the HR Cert Fit AssessmentHow do you get aPHRi certified?
Getting aPHRi certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and take the exam.
- Decide which exam to take. Confirm the aPHRi fits your experience, location, and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help you find your level.
- Apply for the exam. HRCI handles applications, eligibility review, and scheduling (details at hrci.org).
- Decide when and where you’ll test. HRCI exams are offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a live proctor from your home or office. The aPHRi is also offered in Arabic.
- Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study or a prep course. (More below.)
- Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 4-week aPHRi schedule make this easy.
- Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
- Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
- Use your designation and stay certified. Add aPHRi after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 45 HR recertification credits or by retaking the exam.

Self-study or a prep course?
About half of our customers self-study, and for international candidates it’s often the most practical choice. It’s the lowest-cost option, works in any time zone, and suits self-motivated learners. Think about how you learn best and choose materials that match. The 2026 HRCP Program for aPHRi comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions for exactly that reason.
Prefer an instructor? Some partner organizations use HRCP materials as their course textbook, and aPHR-level courses can be as short as four weeks. Course options outside the U.S. vary by country, so check our current course list or contact us for help.
What’s on the aPHRi exam?
As of 2026, the aPHRi exam has 90 questions (65 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions), and you get 1 hour and 45 minutes to answer them. Questions cover five functional areas, and HR Operations carries the most weight at 33%.
- Questions: 90 (65 scored + 25 pretest)
- Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time
- Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
- Cost: $400 USD ($300 exam fee + $100 application fee)
| aPHRi functional area | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| HR Operations | 33% |
| Recruitment and Selection | 22% |
| Employee Relations, Health, and Safety | 20% |
| Compensation and Benefits | 15% |
| Human Resource Development and Retention | 10% |
These areas are different from the U.S. aPHR, which puts the most weight on U.S. compliance and risk management. The aPHRi focuses on how HR works day to day: operations, hiring, pay, development, and employee relations, applied in an international setting. Expect mostly multiple-choice questions, plus other formats such as multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and short scenarios.
The HRCP Program for aPHRi covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam, organized into these same five functional areas.
As of 2026, HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline for the aPHRi.
How long should you study for the aPHRi?
Plan on roughly 50 to 75 hours of study over one to two months. If HR is brand new to you, or you’re studying in a second language, give yourself the longer end of that range.
HRCP’s free 4-week aPHRi study schedule gives you a week-by-week plan. Use it as-is, or stretch it over six to eight weeks if you need more time.
Focus on the functional areas with the most questions (HR Operations and Recruitment and Selection make up more than half the exam) and the topics that are newest to you.

To pass the aPHRi, follow a study schedule, study a little every day, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain core HR concepts and apply them to everyday workplace situations.
The study tips we share with every aPHRi candidate:
- Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
- Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
- Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
- Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
- Connect concepts to your country. As you study each principle, ask how it works under your local employment laws and practices.
- Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
- Practice timed exams. On the aPHRi you have a little over a minute per question. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
- Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
- Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming.
