SPHRi Exam Prep: What Is the SPHRi and How to Pass It
HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.
By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026
What is the SPHRi?
The SPHRi® (Senior Professional in Human Resources – International) is a senior-level HR certification for leaders based outside the United States who shape HR strategy, align people practices with business goals, and guide organizational direction in a single international setting. Earning it tells employers you can lead HR strategically in your region.
An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The SPHRi is built for HR directors, heads of HR, and senior advisors who set direction for their organization and know how HR strategy plays out under their own country’s laws and culture.
So why does it matter? A professional certification:
- Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
- Builds credibility with employers
- Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
- Helps you stand out in the job market
- Increases career mobility and earning potential
- Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards

SPHRi stands for Senior Professional in Human Resources – International. Once you’ve passed, you can use the SPHRi designation after your name and on your CV or résumé.
The SPHRi is HRCI’s senior international certification, above the entry-level aPHRi and the professional-level PHRi. If you lead HR in the United States, the SPHR is the U.S. version.
Is the SPHRi right for you?
The SPHRi may be right for you if you lead HR strategy outside the United States: you develop policy, guide senior leaders, and are accountable for HR results across your organization. As of 2026, you need four to seven years of professional-level HR experience, depending on your education, plus documented knowledge of local employment laws.
To be eligible for the SPHRi, you need one of the following:
- At least 4 years of professional-level HR experience plus a master’s degree or global equivalent
- At least 5 years of professional-level HR experience plus a bachelor’s degree or global equivalent
- At least 7 years of professional-level HR experience
The SPHRi also requires documented knowledge of local employment laws, so gather that documentation before you apply. If most of your work is still operational, the PHRi may be the better fit right now.
We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.
Not sure which level fits you?
Take our free HR Certification Fit Assessment. It’s built around the U.S. credentials, but the levels line up: aPHR to aPHRi, PHR to PHRi, and SPHR to SPHRi. Use it to find your level, then choose the international version.
Take the HR Cert Fit AssessmentHow do you get SPHRi certified?
Getting SPHRi certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and take the exam.
- Decide which exam to take. Confirm the SPHRi fits your experience, location, and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help you find your level.
- Apply for the exam. HRCI handles applications, eligibility review, and scheduling (details at hrci.org).
- Decide when and where you’ll test. HRCI exams are offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a live proctor from your home or office. The SPHRi is also offered in Spanish (Castilian).
- Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study or a prep course. (More below.)
- Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 10- and 6-week PHRi/SPHRi schedules make this easy.
- Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
- Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
- Use your designation and stay certified. Add SPHRi after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 60 recertification credits (45 HR and 15 Business) or by retaking the exam.

Self-study or a prep course?
About half of our customers self-study, and for senior leaders outside the U.S. it’s often the most practical choice. It’s the lowest-cost option, fits a demanding calendar in any time zone, and suits self-motivated learners. The HRCP Program for PHRi/SPHRi comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions, plus a Spanish-language online edition.
Prefer an instructor and peers? Some partner organizations outside the U.S. teach PHRi/SPHRi prep courses using HRCP materials. Options vary by country, so check our current course list (filter by PHRi/SPHRi) or contact us.
What’s on the SPHRi exam?
As of 2026, the SPHRi exam has 140 questions (115 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions), and you get 2 hours and 45 minutes to answer them. Questions cover five functional areas, and Leadership and Strategy carries the most weight at 33%.
- Questions: 140 (115 scored + 25 pretest), mostly multiple-choice
- Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time
- Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
- Cost: $595 USD ($495 exam fee + $100 application fee)
| SPHRi functional area | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Leadership and Strategy | 33% |
| Talent Management | 23% |
| Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition | 17% |
| Total Rewards | 17% |
| HR Information Management, Safety, and Security | 10% |
The functional areas share names with the U.S. SPHR, but the SPHRi applies them in an international setting, and you get 15 more minutes of testing time. Many questions ask what you should do first or which strategic response is best, so you need to apply what you know, not just recall it.
The HRCP Program for PHRi/SPHRi covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam.
As of 2026, HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline for the SPHRi.
How long should you study for the SPHRi?
Plan on roughly 100 to 150 hours of study over three to four months. Your timeline depends on your experience, the time you can give each week, and whether you’re studying in a second language.
HRCP’s free PHRi/SPHRi study schedules come in two lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:
- 10-week: a steady pace for busy HR leaders
- 6-week: a focused plan if your test date is close
Focus on the functional areas with the most questions (start with Leadership and Strategy) and the areas where you have the least training and experience.

To pass the SPHRi, follow a study schedule, study daily, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain the concepts, perform the necessary calculations, and apply your knowledge to strategic situations in your region.
The study tips we share with every SPHRi candidate:
- Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
- Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
- Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
- Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
- Connect concepts to your country. As you study each principle, ask how it works under your local employment laws and practices.
- Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
- Practice timed exams. On the SPHRi you have a little over a minute per question. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
- Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
- Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming.
