PHRi Exam Prep: What Is the PHRi and How to Pass It
HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.

What is the PHRi?
The PHRi® (Professional in Human Resources – International) is a professional-level HR certification for HR practitioners working outside the United States. It validates your competency, knowledge, and skills, grounded in globally recognized HR principles and applied within your local context.
An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The PHRi is built for HR generalists, specialists, and managers who keep HR running day to day in their own country. Instead of testing U.S. law, it tests whether you can apply sound HR principles wherever you work.
So why does it matter? A professional certification:
- Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
- Builds credibility with employers
- Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
- Helps you stand out in the job market
- Increases career mobility and earning potential
- Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards

PHRi stands for Professional in Human Resources – International. Once you’ve passed, you can use the PHRi designation after your name and on your CV or résumé.
The PHRi is HRCI’s professional-level international certification. It sits between the entry-level aPHRi and the senior-level SPHRi. If you work in the United States, the PHR is the U.S. version.
Is the PHRi right for you?
The PHRi may be right for you if you work in HR outside the United States and handle professional-level, operational HR work. As of 2026, you need one to four years of professional-level HR experience, depending on your education.
To be eligible for the PHRi, you need one of the following:
- At least 1 year of professional-level HR experience plus a master’s degree or global equivalent
- At least 2 years of professional-level HR experience plus a bachelor’s degree or global equivalent
- At least 4 years of professional-level HR experience
New to HR? Start with the aPHRi. Leading HR strategy for your organization? Look at the SPHRi.
We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.
Not sure which level fits you?
Take our free HR Certification Fit Assessment. It’s built around the U.S. credentials, but the levels line up: aPHR to aPHRi, PHR to PHRi, and SPHR to SPHRi. Use it to find your level, then choose the international version.
Take the HR Cert Fit AssessmentHow do you get PHRi certified?
Getting PHRi certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and take the exam.
- Decide which exam to take. Confirm the PHRi fits your experience, location, and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help you find your level.
- Apply for the exam. HRCI handles applications, eligibility review, and scheduling (details at hrci.org).
- Decide when and where you’ll test. HRCI exams are offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a live proctor from your home or office. The PHRi is also offered in Spanish (Castilian).
- Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study or a prep course. (More below.)
- Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 10- and 6-week PHRi/SPHRi schedules make this easy.
- Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
- Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
- Use your designation and stay certified. Add PHRi after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 60 HR recertification credits or by retaking the exam.

Self-study or a prep course?
About half of our customers self-study, and for international candidates it’s often the most practical choice. It’s the lowest-cost option, works in any time zone, and suits self-motivated learners. The HRCP Program for PHRi/SPHRi comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions, plus a Spanish-language online edition.
Prefer an instructor and classmates? Some partner organizations outside the U.S. teach PHRi/SPHRi prep courses using HRCP materials. Options vary by country, so check our current course list (filter by PHRi/SPHRi) or contact us.
What’s on the PHRi exam?
As of 2026, the PHRi exam has 115 questions (90 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions), and you get 2 hours and 15 minutes to answer them. Questions cover seven functional areas, and Employee and Labor Relations carries the most weight at 20%.
- Questions: 115 (90 scored + 25 pretest), mostly multiple-choice
- Time: 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time
- Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
- Cost: $495 USD ($395 exam fee + $100 application fee)
| PHRi functional area | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Employee and Labor Relations | 20% |
| Employee Engagement | 17% |
| Total Rewards | 15% |
| Business Management | 14% |
| Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition | 14% |
| Learning and Development | 10% |
| HR Information Management | 10% |
The functional areas share names with the U.S. PHR, but the PHRi applies them in an international context, and you get 15 more minutes of testing time. Expect questions that ask you to apply HR principles to realistic situations rather than recall U.S. statutes.
The HRCP Program for PHRi/SPHRi covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam.
As of 2026, HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline for the PHRi.
How long should you study for the PHRi?
Plan on roughly 100 to 150 hours of study over three to four months. Your timeline depends on your experience, the time you can give each week, and whether you’re studying in a second language.
HRCP’s free PHRi/SPHRi study schedules come in two lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:
- 10-week: a steady pace for busy professionals
- 6-week: a focused plan if your test date is close
Focus on the functional areas with the most questions and the areas where you have the least training and experience.

To pass the PHRi, follow a study schedule, study daily, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain the concepts, perform the necessary calculations, and apply your knowledge to real situations in your own workplace.
The study tips we share with every PHRi candidate:
- Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
- Read actively. Highlight, take notes, and don’t skip the charts and exhibits.
- Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
- Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
- Connect concepts to your country. As you study each principle, ask how it works under your local employment laws and practices.
- Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong and review that content.
- Practice timed exams. On the PHRi you have a little over a minute per question. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
- Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
- Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming.
