PHR Exam Prep: What Is the PHR and How to Pass It

HRCP has helped HR professionals prepare for and pass their certification exams since 1995. You can do this, and we’ll help you get there.

By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026

What is the PHR?

The PHR® (Professional in Human Resources) is a professional HR certification for people who implement HR programs and handle day-to-day HR operations, grounded in U.S. employment laws and regulations. Earning it shows employers you have verified knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management.

An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. The PHR is a natural next step for HR generalists, specialists, and managers who keep the day-to-day work of HR running.

So why does it matter? A professional certification:

  • Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
  • Builds credibility with employers
  • Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
  • Helps you stand out in the job market
  • Increases career mobility and earning potential
  • Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards

What does PHR stand for?

PHR stands for Professional in Human Resources. People who pass the exam can use the PHR designation after their name, on their business cards, and in their business correspondence.

The PHR is awarded by the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). It sits between the entry-level aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources) and the senior-level SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources). It is not the same as the SHRM-CP, which is a separate credential from SHRM with its own exam.

Is the PHR right for you?

The PHR may be right for you if you work primarily at a professional level in HR operations: you handle day-to-day HR work, apply policies and employment laws, and support employees and managers. As of 2026, you need one to four years of professional-level HR experience, depending on your education.

To be eligible for the PHR, you need one of the following:

  • At least 1 year of professional-level HR experience plus a master’s degree or higher
  • At least 2 years of professional-level HR experience plus a bachelor’s degree
  • At least 4 years of professional-level HR experience

Your degree doesn’t need to be in HR. If you’re new to HR or work in an HR support role, the aPHR may be a better first step. If you lead HR strategy and policy, look at the SPHR.

We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that best aligns with your career goals.

How do you get PHR certified?

Getting PHR certified comes down to three decisions: which exam to take, when and where to take it, and how to prepare. Then you study with a plan, check your readiness with practice exams, and pass the exam.

  1. Decide which exam to take. Make sure the PHR matches your experience and goals. The HR Cert Fit Assessment can help.
  2. Apply for the exam. HRCI sets the official eligibility rules and fees and handles applications and scheduling (details at hrci.org).
  3. Decide when and where you’ll test. The PHR is offered year-round. Once your application is approved, you have 180 days (about six months) to take the exam, either at a Pearson VUE testing center or online with a live proctor from your home or office.
  4. Decide how you’ll prepare. This is a crucial decision for your success. Most people choose self-study or a prep course. (More on both below.)
  5. Create and follow a study schedule. Set a regular time to study each day. Our free 12-, 8-, and 4-week schedules make this easy.
  6. Use practice exams to check your readiness. Practice exams are the very best way to see how you’re doing. We recommend you aim for 80% or higher on each one.
  7. Take the exam, and trust your preparation. Get a good night’s sleep, manage your nerves, and trust what you know.
  8. Use your designation and stay certified. Add PHR after your name. Your certification is valid for three years; renew it by earning 60 recertification credits or retaking the exam.

Self-study or a prep course?

Nearly half of our customers prepare through self-study. It’s the lowest-cost option, fits any schedule, and works well if you’re self-motivated. Figure out how you learn best and choose materials that match. The 2026 Complete HRCP Program comes in print, online, and print-plus-online editions for exactly that reason.

Prefer structure and accountability? A prep course gives you a set curriculum, an instructor to answer questions, and a built-in pace; most run 12 to 16 weeks. Dozens of partner organizations use HRCP materials as their course textbook, and you can choose from online self-paced, online instructor-led, and face-to-face courses.

Prefer to earn credentials as you go? Our 13 Micro HR Badge Bundle + HR Certification 2,150 Question Test Bank lets you earn digital badges while you study and practice for the PHR.

What’s on the PHR exam?

As of 2026, the PHR exam has 115 questions (90 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions) and you get 2 hours to answer them. Questions cover seven functional areas, with Employee and Labor Relations carrying the most weight at 20%.

  • Questions: 115 (90 scored + 25 pretest)
  • Time: 2 hours, plus 30 minutes of administration time
  • Where: Pearson VUE testing center or online proctoring
  • Cost: $495 ($395 exam fee + $100 application fee)
PHR functional areaShare of exam
Employee and Labor Relations 20%
Employee Engagement 17%
Total Rewards 15%
Business Management 14%
Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition 14%
Learning and Development 10%
HR Information Management 10%

Expect several question types: multiple-choice (the majority), multiple-choice with more than one correct response, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and scenario questions. The exam tests whether you can apply what you know, not just define terms.

The HRCP Program covers the HR body of knowledge tested on the exam. We release a new edition every January, and our staff takes the exams regularly so our materials reflect what’s actually tested.

Exam details are current as of 2026. HRCI sets the official requirements, fees, and exam content outline.

How long should you study for the PHR?

Plan on roughly 100 to 150 hours of study over three to four months. Your timeline depends on your experience, how much time you can give each week, and which areas are newest to you.

A schedule is the best way to cover everything before test day. HRCP’s free 2026 PHR/SPHR study schedules come in three lengths. Use them as-is or adapt them to fit your life:

  • 12-week schedule: a steady pace for busy professionals
  • 8-week schedule: a focused, faster plan
  • 4-week schedule: an intensive plan if your test date is close

Focus your study time on two things: the functional areas with the most questions, and the areas where you have the least training and experience.

How to pass the PHR

To pass the PHR, follow a study schedule, study daily, and use practice exams to find and fix your weak spots. By test day, you should be able to explain the concepts, perform the necessary calculations, and apply your knowledge to real situations.

The study tips we share with every candidate:

  • Create and follow a study schedule, and set a regular time to study each day.
  • Read actively. Highlight what you want to remember and take notes. Don’t skip the charts and exhibits; they show you how concepts apply.
  • Use flashcards the right way. Don’t just know the terms; know how to apply them.
  • Answer the self-assessments at the end of each section of the HRCP materials. They cover the most important concepts for the exam.
  • Study your practice-exam misses. Understand why you got a question wrong, review that content, and fix poor test-taking habits.
  • Practice timed exams. On the PHR you need to answer about one question every 60 seconds. Retake practice exams until you score 80% on each one.
  • Use a variety of sources. We think our practice questions are great, but questions written by others help round out your preparation.
  • Set a test date, sleep well, and trust your preparation. A good night’s sleep will do you more good than cramming the night before.
